The Turkish army fired at targets in Syria Wednesday in reaction to Syrian shelling of an area of Tal Abyad near the border with Turkey, DPA reported.
A mother and four of her children reportedly died from the shelling on the Turkish side of the border. Activists in the area said at least five Syrian shells had landed in the northern Turkish border of Akcakale in Turkey's Sanliurfa province.
Turkish media, quoting government sources, reported that the victims were a mother and four of her children.
The incident prompted the Turkish government to hold an emergency meeting, according to the broadcaster.
