About $ 8 million have been withdrawn from Turkish banks since the beginning of May to the present, head of the Central Bank of Turkey Erdem Basci said, 'Hurriyet' newspaper of Turkey reported on Thursday.

According to Basci, depositors withdrawing their savings from banks in Turkey are mostly citizens of other countries.

He added that the withdrawal of this amount does not represent a threat to the banking sector.

Earlier, Turkish media reported that most depositors withdrew their money from banks on the background of the events taking place in various cities of Turkey.

Protests in Turkey continued for more than two weeks. According to the authorities of the country, they had anti-government character.

On the eve of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with the delegation of the protesters in the park Gezi.

It also reported that a representative of the Turkish Prime Minister, deputy head of the ruling party Huseyin Celik proposed to submit the issue of the reconstruction of Gezi Park to a referendum.
