Turkish, Greek Cypriots agree on joint statement

The Turkish and Greek Cypriot governments have agreed on a 'joint statement' that paves the way for the resumption of U.N.-sponsored negotiation talks to reunite the island, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus said in a written statement on Friday, Anadolu Agency reported.

The negotiations are scheduled to resume the following week, the statement said.

The eastern Mediterranean island of Cyprus has been partitioned since 1974 when a military coup that attempted to unify the island with Greece was followed by a Turkish military intervention.

Peace talks between the Greek Cypriot administration and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus continue under a United Nations initiative.
