Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Foreign Minister Ozdil Nami said Greek Cypriot leaders have rejected Turkish Cypriot demands for more frequent talks between Greek and Turkish Cypriots on the reunification of Cyprus, Anadolu agency reported.

"We are concerned over the lack of progress due to some issues," said Naim on Thursday, adding that both sides should strive for the success of the process.

Noting that the Turkish side has contributed to the success of the talk, Naim urged their Greek partners to accelerate negotiations to reach a solution for reunification.

In February, Turkish and Greek Cypriot leaders announced a joint declaration which outlined the contours of a federal state, reuniting the island.

On Wednesday, Nami said the Turkish Cypriot government wants to reach a new and comprehensive solution, saying the joint declaration as "a comprehensive solution will integrate the Turkish Cypriot people with the European Union."

The island of Cyprus has remained divided into Greek and Turkish parts since a coup by a military junta in Greece in 1974 led to Greek Cypriots claiming the island, which was followed by a Turkish mission to protect the Turkish Cypriots.

The Greek Cypriot administration is EU members, and the TRNC is internationally recognized except by Turkey, which is the only country that recognizes the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
