Leader of the Armenian-Russian public organisation, Robert Aharonian, has voiced his intention to refuse from running for the post of Armenian President, News-Armenia reported today.
Aharonian submitted the required documents to the Central Election Commission to be registered as a presidential candidate, but he has not paid the election deposit of eight million drams (around $20,000). On Tuesday, the Central Election Commission ordered Aharonyan and seven other candidates with 48 hours to pay a bail.
However Aharonian said he refuses to continue competing because of financial problems.
Two more candidates, the president of the Armenian Federation of Combat Karate Kobudo Taron Abrahamyan and member of the Prosperous Armenia Party, lawyer Ruben Aivazian have recently refused to participate in the presidential race.
Presidential elections in Armenia will be held on February 18. Some 15 people submitted documents to the Central Election Commission to be registered as candidates. A candidate registration process will last until January 14. The election campaign will begin on January 21 and end at 24:00 on February 16.
