As a result of investigations carried out by the Armenian National Security Service, 47-year-old Khachatur Poghosyan and 41-year old Samvel Harutyunyan were arrested on February 7 for the attempted assassination of presidential candidate Paruyr Hayrikyan.
These individuals are without legal status in Yerevan. They have no certain work. Earlier, they were convicted of drug trafficking, Armenia Today reported.
According to the Armenian National Security Council, Pogosyan and Harutyunyan gave testimony on the circumstances of the assassination. Their motives are being examined. The public will be updated on the investigation's progress.
Presidential candidate Paruyr Hayrikyan was shot in the shoulder on Tpagrichneri Street (Pechatniki) in the centre of Yerevan where his parents reside.
Legal proceedings were instituted under Article 34-305 of the Criminal Code of Armenia. The investigation is being conducted by the National Security Service.
According to the Constitution of Armenia, in the event of insurmountable obstacles for a candidate, a presidential election can be delayed by two weeks.
The sixth Armenian presidential election will be held on Feb.18 from 08:00 to 20:00 local time. The head of state is elected for a term of five years.
Those running for the presidency are the incumbent president and ruling Republican Party leader Serzh Sargsyan, former Prime Minister Grant Bagratyan, chairman of the Heritage Party Raffi Hovhannisyan, Paruyr Hayrikyan, Arman Melikyan, Andrias Ghukasyan, Vardan Setrakyan and the leader of the National Accord Party Aram Harutyunyan.
