Former Armenian presidential candidate Vartan Setrakian, charged with the attempted murder of another candidate Parouir Hayrikyan, will appeal to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), Armenianreport writes. The cassation complaint filed in connection with his arrest was rejected.

Currently, Sedrakian's defence is preparing a lawsuit in the European Court, the Sirunyan law firm informed.

Earlier, the court of general jurisdiction of Yerevan's administrative districts Kentron and Nork-Marash decided to arrest Sedrakian for a period of two months. The meeting was held behind closed doors and a request for the arrest was presented by the National Security Service of Armenia.

On March 5, Sedrakian was charged under Article 34-305 of the Criminal Code (attempt to murder a state, political or public figure) within a criminal case being investigated by the Investigation Department of the National Security Council. On the same day, the court of general jurisdiction of the two administrative districts of Yerevan granted the request of the investigative body assigning a two-month arrest as a preventive measure against Sedrakian.

Vartan Sedrakian's name came up in connection with the assassination attempt on the leader of the National Self-Determination Union party Parouir Hayrikyan after it was revealed that the two men detained for the attack on Hayrikyan worked for an epos specialist. He had previously denied any involvement in the assassination attempt, but did not rule out the possibility of his arrest after the election.

A joint investigation group was created with the participation of the police and National Security Service representatives. The case is being administered by the National Security Service.

The National Security Service's press centre reported on February 9 that Hachatur Poghosyan and Samvel Harutyunyan were detained on suspicion of the attempted murder of Hayrikyan. A day later the discovery of a revolver from which shots were fired into a presidential candidate Parouir Hayrikyan, was found in the possession of one of the detainees.

Incumbent President Serzh Sargsyan won the first round of February 18 presidential elections in Armenia with 58.64 per cent of the vote.
