Centre for Strategic Studies under Azerbaijan’s President looking forward to cooperate with US influential think tanks

Director of the Centre for Strategic Studies under Azerbaijan's President Mr. Elkhan Nuriyev arrived to the United States in order to find partners among US NGOs and to discuss the regional situation, Trend News' Washington DC correspondent reports.

On December 2nd Mr. Nuriyev met with the Vice Chairman of the Cohen Group Ambassador Marc Grossman, Trend News was told at the Cohen Group.

Mr. Nuriyev informed Mr. Grossman about the main activities of the Center for Strategic Studies. He particularly mentioned that the center held a number of conferences abroad, including the US (in 2008).

The director of the center said his organization is actively cooperating with a number of think thanks around the world and is looking forward to create strong links with US think tanks. The Cohen Group representative expressed a great interest in this center's activities and said both organizations should work closely in future.

During the conversation Mr. Nuriyev also mentioned that Azerbaijan is still suffering from Armenians' occupation in Nagorno-Karabakh. Except that he spoke about general risks and security in the region, also mentioning the importance of Azerbaijan as an energy security diversifier.

The director of the Centre for Strategic Studies under Azerbaijan's President also met with Richard Armitage, president of the Armitage International think tank and former US under secretary of State.

Nuriyev stressed the importance of scientific cooperation between the two organizations and between the think tanks of Azerbaijan and US on the whole. Ambassador Armitage agreed that creating better ties is in the interest of both countries. Nuriyev and Armitage discussed recent regional events including Nagorno-Karabakh peaceful process.

Later this week Nuriyev will be attending a "Geopolitical state of the Caspian basin and America-Azerbaijan relations during Obama administration" conference in Chicago-Kent College of Law of Illinois Institute of Technology organized by U.S. Azerbaijanis Network (USAN).

The USAN reports that the purpose of this conference is to inform the U.S. based analysts about the geopolitical realities in the Caspian basin, Azerbaijan's decisive position as the main source of the energy resources in the region and a transit country, role in the global energy security, importance of the strategic partnership between Baku and Washington, other security problems of the region.
