Construction of Azerbaijani segment of EPEG optic backbone completed

Work on the construction of the Azerbaijani segment of the Europe Persia Express Gateway (EPEG) project has been completed, Delta Telecom technical director Raid Alekberli told Trend on Tuesday.

Work on the construction of the Azerbaijani segment of the Europe Persia Express Gateway (EPEG) project has been completed, Delta Telecom technical director Raid Alekberli told Trend on Tuesday.

"A test launch of the Azerbaijani segment of the fibre optic backbone is expected in the next two months," Alekberli said.

The installation of the network and international connections infrastructure is being implemented under the programme. Alcatel-Lucent is the telecommunications equipment provider for the construction of the cable line and the construction costs of the Azerbaijani section are more than three million euros.

EPEG Iranian TIC, Omantel, Rostelecom and C & W (Cable & Wireless) are all participants in the project.

EPEG originates in Oman and will be routed to Frankfurt. It is supposed to pass through the territory of three countries (Azerbaijan, Poland and Ukraine).

The bandwidth will hit about 3.2 Tbps, and its length will extend to 6000 kilometres. The preliminary project cost is more than $200 million and laying the cable is expected to be launched in May 2012.
