The Azerbaijani Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies has prepared a program for preferential distribution of digital TV decoders to poor families, acting Minister of Communications and Information Technologies of Azerbaijan, Ali Abbasov told journalists on Monday.

According to the acting Minister, the distribution of decoders on preferential terms will benefit those receiving state social assistance.

"By the end of the year, Azerbaijan's settlements will be fully covered by the digital broadcast signal. The population's readiness is the main issue in the transition to a new broadcast standard. Yet the major part of population have TV sets supporting analogue broadcasts," Abbasov said.

It was earlier said that the shutdown of the analogue signal at the 'Teleradio' production association will be carried out in phases, starting with the major cities of Azerbaijan (Ganja, Shirvan, Lankaran, etc.).

Currently, works are being carried out by the production association to install reserve DVB-T transmitters and alternative radiorelay lines in order to provide a 100 percent coverage of the country's population by the digital signal. Works in the south direction, as well as in the direction of the Central Aran regions and Gazakh districts have been completed.

Analogue signal broadcasting will be gradually suspended after completion of the installation of backup transmitters. According to the production association's forecasts if the works will go as scheduled, the process of shutting down of the analogue signal will start by late 2013.

Currently, a social package, consisting of 12 channels is available for the population. In Baku, the number of programs is 24. Digital content is broadcasted in the MPEG-4 format. Subscribers need to obtain a decoder for the transition to digital broadcasting.
