By Huseyn Valiyev - Trend:

Azerbaijan and Turkey have begun to conduct joint experiments to examine seismic activity by using the technological developments of the Institute of Cybernetics of the Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), director of the Institute of Cybernetics under the academy Telman Aliyev told Trend on Tuesday.

The specialists of the institute installed two monitoring stations in Istanbul. Both stations are connected to a monitoring center of the institute, he said.

The, experiments are carried out in collaboration with scholars of the Istanbul Bogazici University. A cooperation contract will be signed in the near future.

"The stations must be located in deep wells to get more accurate results," he said. "Not all countries have such facilities. The stations used in Istanbul today were installed in the basement. A contract will be signed with the Bogazici University. An issue of drilling such a well has been agreed. The Turkish side shows great interest in this project implementation."

The, experiments have yielded positive results. The earthquake that occurred in Istanbul in early December 2013 was predicted by the stations 15 hours before it happened.

"An important component of the project is a large number of the monitoring stations," he said. There are seven stations in the territory of Azerbaijan. The main objective is to expand the network beyond Azerbaijan. The main feature of the network is that the stations must be at a great distance from each other. We are monitoring abnormal seismic processes. An increase in the number of stations will allow predicting seismic activity."

The future plans of the institute include the installation of another station in Izmir. One monitoring station is used in Turkmenistan. The negotiations on installing more stations are being held with Georgia.
