Georgian parliamentary commission makes statement on anniversary of August war

Georgia, Tbilisi, Aug.8/ Trend N.Kirtzkhalia /

The Georgian parliamentary temporary commission on restoration of territorial integrity made a statement on anniversary of the Russian-Georgian war in August 2008.

The statement notes that as a result of Russian aggression, thousands of innocent people were killed and injured, the military and civilian infrastructure were destroyed, ethnic cleansing of Georgians was carried out and 20 percent of the Georgian territory were occupied.

Georgia could stop the aggressors in dozen kilometers away from Tbilisi and sign a ceasefire agreement due to the considerate rapid response of the Georgian leadership, dedication of our Armed Forces, the unity of the multi-ethnic population of the country and international support, particularly, the then chairman of the European Union, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and the efforts of the U.S. administration, the statement said.

The Commission believes that the international community should strengthen activity to maintain peace and stability in conflict regions and to avoid Russia's new aggression against Georgia and compel Russia to meet its obligations under the ceasefire agreement and withdraw its troops from Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

The commission expressed its confidence that the UN, the OSCE, the EU and other international organizations will take effective measures to hold international monitoring, to create a new peacekeeping format and internationalize the peacekeeping contingent to establish peace and stability in conflict regions, within the existing international documents.
