The Georgian Foreign Ministry has protested against the decision of Russia to deploy its Helicopter Regiment of Airborne Forces in Novorossiysk.

On March 1 the media released a statement from Navy Commander Vladimir Shamanov about the creation of the first helicopter regiment and its placement in Novorossiysk, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia said

Shamanov justified this decision by fact that "the situation in Abkhazia and South Ossetia is often complicated and tension in relations with Georgia is growing. There are problems in the North Caucasus. Probably whilst there, we will start the practical use of helicopters in the course of combat training.

"We must also take into account that the Russian Federation has previously placed a set of operational-tactical missiles, Point U and artillery battalions, armed with rocket systems Tornado in the occupied territories of Georgia, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia.

Military actions were launched in the Georgian territory, South Ossetia on Aug.8 in 2008. Later Russian troops occupied the city of Tskhinvali and drove the Georgian military back. Russia recognised the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in late August. In response, Tbilisi broke off diplomatic relations with Moscow and announced the two unrecognised republics as occupied territories.
