Since Georgia gained independence in 1991 until 2009, 1,058,300 people, which made up 25.1 per cent of the population emigrated from the country, a report on the 'Facilitation of visa and readmission: Prospects for visa-free communication', which was prepared by the European Initiative of Liberal Academy on the World Bank's directive.
According to the study, the top 10 countries that received the highest number of Georgia's emigrants include: Russia, Armenia, Ukraine, Greece, Israel, USA, Germany, Cyprus, Spain and Turkey. Some 88 per cent of all Georgian emigrants account for these 10 countries.
Emigration of Georgian citizens to the EU has a clear direction. According to the World Bank, 88 per cent of emigrants from Georgia account for five EU member states. Top five countries include: Greece, Germany, Cyprus, Spain and Latvia.
