French President Nicolas Sarkozy will always be a friend of Georgia, Deputy Foreign Minister Nikoloz Vashakidze said at a news briefing on Monday, while commenting on the presidential elections in France.
Vashakidze said the Georgian side thanks Sarkozy for that friendship and cooperation, which he showed towards Georgia. He noted the Georgian side is especially grateful for the contributions the French president has made to the security of Georgia.
With regard to the election results, Vashakidze said this is the democratic choice of the French people, which Georgia respects.
He also noted that the newly elected French President, Francois Hollande, is an experienced and serious politician, with strong political values.
"We hope that the cooperation with France will be successful and fruitful during his presidency," Vashakidze said.
Francois Hollande received 51.62 per cent of the vote in the French presidential election on Sunday, Reuters reported with reference to the French Interior Ministry.
Hollande has received 18,000,438 votes, while Nicolas Sarkozy, who won 48.38 per cent of the vote, received 16,869, 371 votes, RIA Novosti reported.
