U.S. allocates $240,000 for Georgia’s electoral programmes

Georgia, Tbilisi, July 25 /Trend N.Kirtzkhalia/

Eight new electoral programmes are being developed with the support of the U.S. government, director of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Stephen Heykin and project manager of the International Election Fund (IFES) Nermin Nisich said to the public and journalists on Wednesday. The total amount of the grant is $240,000.

Thematic television discussion and debate will be carried out and leading regional and national broadcasters will be monitored in order to improve the overall electoral environment in the project. The website www.ivote.ge will raise consciousness of the electorate and the availability of information. In addition assistance will be provided to those with disabilities to participate in the elections.

Projects will be implemented with the financial support of the Agency for International Development as part of the International Election Fund, aimed at increasing confidence in the electoral process.

Two major recipients the Centre for Human Rights and Internews presented the first results of the monitoring of hidden advertising on TV and the number and quality of regional broadcasters at the event.

The U.S. government has allocated more that $20 million to improve the electoral environment in Georgia in the past 20 years.
