Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has called Argentine Foreign Minister Hector Marcos Timerman's visit to Georgia 'historic'.

"So far, none of the Latin American countries' officials has visited Georgia," Saakashvili said at a meeting with the Argentine minister at the Presidential Palace in Tbilisi.

The sides discussed bilateral relations as well as Georgia's relations with the regional countries. According to the president, this visit will be a "new impetus" for the further development of bilateral relations.

For his part, Timerman noted that it is of honour to be the first representative of Latin America to visit Tbilisi.

"We are ready to cooperate with Georgia at the highest level and we do not need mediators, we need to communicate directly," he said.

"For years, Argentina has supported Georgia's democratic course. We believe that the only way to resolve conflicts is a dialogue. Argentina supports relevant resolution of the UN and believes that role of international organizations should be increased in the disputed areas," Timerman said.
