The preliminary results of the parliamentary elections in Georgia give hope for improving Russian-Georgian relations, speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko said today, RIA Novosti reported.

Billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili's Georgian Dream opposition bloc is keeping a leading position in the party and single-seat constituencies.

"We hope and expect that the changes in Georgia will positively influence the improvement of our relations," she told media on Tuesday. "We are very interested in this."

Matvienko said that one can always solve disputes with an adequate Georgian leadership. One can establish mutually beneficial partnership without any radical decisions. "So we are looking forward to the future of our relations," she said.

She stressed that Russia will respect any choice of the Georgian people.

The parliamentary elections were held in Georgia on October 1. Around 14 parties and two political blocs participated in the elections.

The opposition coalition Georgian Dream Party continues to maintain a lead position after counting over a quarter of ballots.

The ruling United National Movement - more good to people Party ranks second.
Parliamentary elections were held in Georgia on a mixed - list-majority system. Around 150 MPs must be elected - 77 on the lists (a passing barrier of five per cent), 73 - single-seat constituencies.

Parliament will receive more authority in 2013 after amendments to the Constitution take effect resulting in the president's power being reduced.
