The U.S. deputy assistant secretary has delivered a letter from President Barack Obama to the Geogrian president, in which he stressed the importance of holding parliamentary elections in Georgia as part of the country's democratic development.
"It was impossible to do anything more to protect the heritage of the Rose Revolution than hold free and fair elections, which confirmed the success of Georgia as a democratic state... Now, when the election is over, the whole world sees that Georgia has overcome this phase under your leadership. It is a consequence of your democratic progress and commitment to the course, and it will be your steadfast legacy. Then, when the election results have been a big disappointment for you and your supporters, they show that a competitive democracy was formed in Georgia during your leadership," the letter said.
The U.S. president said it is necessary for Saakashvili to continue to rule the country and work closely with parliament.
"You together are responsible for the continuation of the democratic and economic development. Your public statements in connection with the recognition of the election results confirmed that the interests of all Georgians is the most important for you," the letter said.
Parliamentary elections were held in Georgia on October 1. Around 14 parties and two political blocs participated in the elections.
The October 1 parliamentary elections were held under a mixed-list-majority system.
Georgian Dream won 85 deputies in the parliament's mandate, and the United National Movement won 65.
The leader of the winning coalition in the parliamentary elections "Georgian Dream" Ivanishvili previously submitted candidates for ministers in the new government of Georgia.
Ivanishvili plans to become prime minister.
