The U.S. Embassy believes that an agreement between the President and government of Georgia regarding the candidacy of the Chief of the Armed Forces Joint Staff amid internal tension in the country is encouraging.

"The stability and prosperity of Georgia depend on the ability of both sides to find a compromise to ensure national interests. Reaching this agreement on the background of a meeting of NATO member countries foreign ministers in Brussels is encouraging," the Embassy said on Wednesday.

Immediately after the parliamentary elections held on Oct.1, the Georgian president appointed General Giorgi Kalandadze as chief of the Armed Forces Joint Staff. This decision was not supported by Georgian Defence Minister, Irakli Alasania.

Kalandadze was detained by the Prosecutor's Office and later removed from office. After that, consultations were held between Mikheil Saakashvili and Alasania and new candidacy of chief of the Armed Forces Joint Staff, Colonel Irakli Dzneladze was agreed.
