Georgia's Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili has announced the ending of the criminal prosecution of the country's former officials, RIA Novosti reported.
"The process is completed. The system of violence and lies is defeated, and now we must forgive all those who, by their own choice or not, participated in this system. We must forgive them and come up with something like amnesty", Ivanishvili said in his New Year address to the nation aired on Georgian TV on Tuesday night.
After the victory of Georgian Dream party, which is led by Ivanishvili, in the parliamentary elections the new government started the process of criminal prosecution of former officials and members of the former ruling United National Movement party, led by the country's president Mikheil Saakashvili.
During the last two months former defense minister, former deputy interior minister, former finance and energy minister, former education and justice minister, former employees of the interior ministry, Tbilisi mayor's office and other departments were detained. Most of them were charged with abuse of power. Some detainees were released by court decision.
