190 prisoners will be pardoned in Georgia, Sozar Subari, Georgian Minister of Corrections and Legal Assistance.

"A very important issue was dealt with here: Georgia recognized the presence of political prisoners in the country that were the subject of many international reports. Action on this matter means that such an incident will never happen again", Subari said.

According to him, the immediate release of all those imprisoned for political reasons will take place on January 13 at 10:00. The doors of all of the prisons will be opened for an hour and 190 people will be set free.

"As for other inmates, we are waiting two weeks for their release in order to send their cases to court; however, we will try to do this the very first day and hope the court will process the paperwork within the two-month period that it was given for this procedure", Subari said.

As mentioned by Eka Beselia, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights at a press-conference, the amnesty law will come into force on January 12.

"The deadline for the President to sign the bill is January 11. If the President does not sign it on January 11, the law will enter into force the following day. On January 12 the chairman of the parliament will become authorized to sign it, and on the same day it will go public, which means that the law will take effect," Beselia said.
According to him, consultations on the amnesty law were held with the Justice, Interior and Corrections Ministries as well as other agencies, and the agreement on the execution of the law was reached.

"On behalf of the Parliament I want to say that Parliament will do everything to make sure that the law takes effect in a timely manner. Not a single day will be wasted. I also would like to add that the release of political prisoners will take place without court participation, they will immediately leave their place of detention," Beselia said.
