Georgia, Tbilisi, Jan.18 / Trend, N.Kirtskhalia /
The Georgian president has advised the new government not to organise action against real opposition. Mikheil Saakashvili made this statement on Wednesday at a press briefing at the presidential palace, commenting on the protest action demanding his resignation which begins on Jan.20 in front of his residence.
"I have seen the government of Georgia in the early 1990s which organised action against the opposition and we have already seen how it ended. Therefore, I do not advise anyone to follow this path. It does not lead anywhere," he stressed.
The president expressed his surprise that the real power in Georgia organises action against the opposition, hinting that the protests demanding his resignation are instigated by the authorities.
However, Saakashvili's term of office ends end in October 2013 in accordance with the Constitution of Georgia adopted last year.
Parliamentary elections were held in Georgia on Oct.1.
