The Attorney General of Georgia has given an explanation for his decision to release from criminal liability Vladimir Bedukadze, the author of a scandalous prison torture and abuse video.

As Archil Kbilashvili said at the briefing, he was influenced by several factors.

"The first is the fact that these videos saved thousands of prisoners from future torture. And on the issue of Bedukadze, we got the facts on the crime from Bedukadze himself and there was no other evidence of his guilt," Attorney General said.

Kbilashvili believes that the person who made the situation public has the right to compassion and forgiveness.

"He did not know that Kbilashvili would be the prosecutor and was facing up to 30 years in prison," the Attorney General said, noting that Bedukadze did not trade the videos.

The attorney stressed that formally, under the existing law, he had the right to make such a decision.

"Formally, Article 218 of the Criminal Code of Georgia allows the attorney to use special powers to exempt the person from criminal responsibility for any crime," he said.

The day before the Prime Minister of Georgia Bidzina Ivanishvili issued a statement in which he did not agree with the motives of the Attorney General at Bedukadze's exemption from criminal responsibility, expressing the hope that Kbilashvili will reconsider his decision and it will be possible to execute the justice in relation to Bedukadze, who also participated in the tortures and abuses of people.
