The governor of the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region of Georgia Tengiz Gunava who was pardoned by the President of Georgia left the prison No.9 on July 31. He was sentenced to four years of imprisonment for abuse of power.
Tengiz Gunava, born in 1976, who was sentenced by the Criminal Cases Chamber of the Tbilisi City Court on July 12, 2013, was pardoned in accordance with the first paragraph of Article 73 of Georgian Constitution, Georgian President's order said.
According to the order Gunava was exempted from punishment and his criminal record was removed.
Tengiz Gunava was sentenced on July 12, with the amnesty on two articles of Criminal Code of Georgia: article 182 of the Criminal Code of Georgia - appropriation or embezzlement with the use of official position, which led to a particularly large damage, as well as, the article 333 - abuse of power.
Gunava was accused of injuring his driver and misappropriation of petrol worth 49,000 lari (1 USD= 1.65 lari) from the Interior Ministry.
He was also accused of illegal possession of weapons and drug trafficking. Nevertheless, these charges were later removed, as the investigation proved that the police planted weapons and drugs on him.
