Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili and Defence Minister Irakli Alasania will commemorate those killed during the armed conflict in Georgia in August 2008 at the Mukhatgverdi fraternal cemetery at 12.30 today.
The servicemen's oath ceremony will be held at Gori central square at 17:30. Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili, Defence Minister Irakli Alasania, Chief of the Joint Staff of the Armed Forces, Colonel Irakli Dzneladze and representatives of the executive and legislative branches will attend the event.
Around 188 Georgian servicemen, police officers and 396 civilians were killed in the military conflict in 2008.
Large scale military action was launched in South Ossetia on August 8, 2008. Later, Russian troops occupied Tskhinvali and expelled the Georgian military.
Russia recognised the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in late August. In response, Tbilisi ended diplomatic relations with Moscow and has called the two unrecognised republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia occupied territories.
