The U.S expressed its concern about the demarcation of the Abkhazian and Ossetian border. The U.S embassy in Georgia issued a statement on this issue on Friday by orders of the State Department.

"We are concerned about the establishment of borders along the administrative line between Abkhazia and South Ossetia. This process was recently intensified in Ditsi and Khurvaleti . The border divides families and neighbors and negatively affects the population and activity on both sides of the barbed wire. We appreciate the peaceful attitude of the Georgian government in the settlement of the conflict. We call on all parties to help find a way out of this situation," the statement said.

Large scale military action was launched in South Ossetia on August 8, 2008. Later, Russian troops occupied Tskhinvali and expelled the Georgian military.
Russia recognised the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in late August. In response, Tbilisi ended diplomatic relations with Moscow and has called the two unrecognised republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia occupied territories.
