Tbilisi, Georgia, Dec. 2

By Nana Kirtzkhalia - Trend:

On Dec. 2 the Tbilisi City Court Judge, Ketevan Jachvadze did not grant the defence motion to dismiss the criminal prosecution against the former Interior Minister, Vano Merabishvili.

The judge appointed the proceedings on dispersal of an opposition rally on May 26, 2011 to December 11, 2013, 12:00 local time.

Merabishvili's lawyer believes that the prosecution of his client should be dismissed today, because there are no signs of criminal offence in the case. In fact there is an expert opinion saying that the dispersal of an unsanctioned rally on May 26 was legal, the lawyer said.

"Use of excessive force by individual police officers does not mean that it is Merabishvili's fault. I am sure that the court will make the acquittal if it withstands the political pressure," Merabishvili's lawyer, Otar Kakhidze underscored.

Merabishvili, and all those who came to support him, left the courtroom today as a sign of protest. The process then continued without the defendant.
