Georgian president hopes for U.S. help on eve of signing association agreement

Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili met with the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland who is on a visit to Georgia, Georgian presidential administration told Trend on Dec.6.

The parties discussed a large spectrum of issues of bilateral and multilateral cooperation, including the process of integration into the European and Euro-Atlantic structures, future plans for cooperation within the U.S.-Georgia Charter on Strategic Partnership, the prospects of intensifying trade and economic relations between the two countries, according to the information received from the Georgian presidential administration.

During the meeting there was discussed the significance of Georgian presidential elections and reforms that are being held by the country's government with the aim of democratic development.

The year of 2014 will be difficult for Georgia, as the country is facing serious challenges, Giorgi Margvelashvili said.

The U.S. support is very significant for Georgia on the eve of signing the association agreement, according to Margvelashvili.

The parties also discussed Georgian-Russian relations and the situation in the breakaway regions.

Victoria Nuland expressed satisfaction with the progress achieved by Georgia.

"This is reflected not only in the development of the physical infrastructure, but also in the democratic construction. I again confirm the U.S. support in achieving security and prosperity for Georgia," the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State said.
