By Nana Kirtzkhalia - Trend:

OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities, Astrid Thors accompanied by representatives of the Information-Analytical Department of Georgia's Foreign Ministry has visited the villages of Ditsi, Didi Khurvaleti and Ergneti surrounding Georgia's breakaway regions.

The barbed fences illegally constructed by Russian servicemen were inspected, meetings with the local population were held and familiarization with current problems took place, Georgian Foreign Ministry told Trend on Feb.22.

Following the meetings, Astrid Thors said that the situation is quite complicated and the population has to love under difficult conditions.

The international community must be actively involved in the process of helping the population, according to Thors.

Large scale military action was launched in South Ossetia on August 8, 2008. Later, Russian troops occupied Tskhinvali and expelled the Georgian military.
Russia recognised the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in late August. In response, Tbilisi ended diplomatic relations with Moscow and has called the two unrecognised republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia occupied territories.
