Georgian president, U.S. congressmen mull global and regional security issues

Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili met with a U.S. Congress delegation on June 29, the presidential administration of Georgia told Trend.

The U.S. Congress delegation is being led by Senator Benjamin Cardin (Chairman of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, and Senior Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee).

During the meeting the parties discussed global and regional security issues.

The congressmen also congratulated President Margvelashvili on signing of the EU Association Agreement, and then the parties mulled the future action plan.

The sides also highlighted the importance of Georgian soldiers' participation in NATO operations.

The congressmen underscored the importance of Georgia's participation in ensuring global security, and thanked Georgia for its efforts to support peace. They also stressed that such efforts of Georgia, as well as the reforms, will be adequately displayed at the NATO Wales Summit.

At the meeting, the U.S. congressmen expressed satisfaction with strengthening and deepening of U.S.-Georgia relations within the Charter on Strategic Partnership, and discussed the prospects for further cooperation.

The congressmen and President Margvelashvili also paid special attention to the issue of regional security amid the developments in Ukraine.

Margvelashvili, for his part, thanked the U.S. for pursuing a policy of non-recognition, and supporting the territorial integrity and unity of Georgia.

During their visit to Georgia, the U.S. lawmakers will also meet with the Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, and other members of the government. They also intend to hold a meeting with representatives of the oppositional party the United National Movement.

Georgia will also be visited by Senator of the State of Iowa Thomas Harkin and Congressman Robert Aderholt (Alabama), the member of U.S. Congress House of Representatives Adam Schiff, Republican Congressman Phillip Gingrey and David Schweikert (Arizona).
