Georgia delivers report on civil and political rights in Geneva

Georgia has delivered the fourth periodic report on implementation of the International Covenant On Civil and Political Rights dated 1966 at the UN Human Rights Committee in accordance with the Article 40 of the covenant.

The report was reviewed during the 11th session of the committee within two days with participation of Georgia's Deputy Justice Minister Gocha Lortkipanidze, chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Civil Integration Eka Beselia, MP Tina Khidasheli, Deputy Minister of Corrections and Legal Assistance Archil Talakvadze and others, Georgian Justice Ministry said.

The Georgian delegation is headed by the country's Justice Minister Thea Tsulukiani.

The committee paid attention to around 26 issues. After the delegation head Thea Tsulukiani delivered a brief report, the committee members began to ask questions on various topics. They were citing the report itself, as well as the information received from various sources, including from the national institutions and non-governmental organizations on human rights protection. The questions were related to the rights of women, minors, persons with disabilities, prisoners, justice, investigation of torture of people in prisons and so on.

Besides viewing the current situation, the head of the delegation specified five challenges facing the state. Intensive work is underway on these issues, including, protection of human rights in the occupied territories; strengthening the legal framework for protection of personal data; systematization of applications of citizens regarding the crimes committed in past years and etc.
