A loud explosion has been heard near the German embassy in Afghanistan, witnesses say, BBC reported.
A Kabul police spokesman said initial information indicated it was a rocket attack in Wazir Akbar Khan, an area with several embassies.
There was no immediate news of any casualties.
An AFP photographer on the scene said a rocket landed on a private house near the German embassy, but police said it was not clear what the target was.
An official with Nato's International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) said the incident was being investigated.
"We just had a rocket attack, it went overhead and we're looking into it," the official told AFP.
Police rushed to the scene, which is also close to Isaf headquarters - in the heavily fortified area.
They say the target of the attack was not immediately clear. In October, militants attacked a guesthouse used by United Nations workers in the same area, killing eight people - five of them UN foreign staff.
Correspondents say that because Fridays are a national holiday in Afghanistan, there were was little traffic and few pedestrians in the area.
Local people say that rocket attacks are not unusual in Kabul.
