More than 80 people have been killed by an earthquake and landslide that buried over 25 houses in northern Afghanistan, a police official said Tuesday, DPA reported.
Twin quakes of 5.4 and 5.7 magnitude 30 minutes apart rattled the mountainous region from 1:03 pm (0833 GMT) Monday, according to the US Geological Survey, and were also felt in Kabul.
A landslide of mud and rocks buried several houses and killed as many as 90 people in Burka, a district in the province of Baghlan, 200 kilometres north of the capital, the province's police chief Asadullah Sherzad said.
"We have sent the rescue teams to the area already, and operation is right now under way to pull out corpses," Sherzad said.
He said that villagers and police have so far recovered the bodies of two women from houses destroyed in the earthquakes.
