Afghan, NATO forces capture Taliban leader in southern Helmand

The units of Afghan and NATO-led troops during a combined operation in Helmand province 555 km south of Afghan capital Kabul captured a Taliban leader on Friday, a statement of the alliance released here said, Xinhua reported.

The units of Afghan and NATO-led troops during a combined operation in Helmand province 555 km south of Afghan capital Kabul captured a Taliban leader on Friday, a statement of the alliance released here said, Xinhua reported.

"An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Taliban leader in Now Zad district, Helmand province, today," the statement asserted.

Without identifying the name of the alleged Taliban leader, the statement stressed that "the leader was believed to be coordinating and conducting attacks against Afghan and coalition forces."

The security force also detained a number of insurgents and seized a firearm along with weapon paraphernalia during the operation, the statement contended.

Taliban militants are yet to make comment.
