At least 27 workers died when a coal mine collapsed in northern Afghanistan, officials said Sunday, dpa reported.

"The incident took place Saturday afternoon in Roye Do Aab district, in which more than 40 workers were trapped," Seddiq Azizi, governor spokesman for Samangan province said.

"About 20 others have been wounded and rescue teams are at the scene," Azizi said.

He denied reports that people were illegally digging the mine, saying that "these coal mines are the properties of the Ministry of Mines," and that those trapped were contract workers.

Some of the coal mines in Samangan province are known to be dug without official permission.
