Report: Merkel aide warns Lebanon of over "terror" infiltration

A senior aide to German Chancellor Angela Merkel has warned Lebanon that suspected terrorists may be infiltrating the country's Palestinian refugee camps, according to Lebanese media reports on Friday.

Merkel's foreign policy advisor Christoph Heusgen met President Michel Suleiman and Premier Saad Hariri in Beirut earlier this week, DPA reported.

Heusgen reportedly called for Lebanon to ensure security in the refugee camps, where the Lebanese army does not usually enter.

No specific terror group was mentioned in the reports.

Heusgen's trip to Beirut was reportedly planned at very short notice. He is now in Syria.

The Palestinian camps have become hubs for Sunni fundamentalist groups in recent years. The presence of movements like Jund al Sham and Fatah al-Islam led to a three-month battle with the Lebanese army in Nahr al Bared camp in northern Lebanon in 2007.
