French President Nicolas Sarkozy has become a grandfather at age 54, government spokesman Luc Chatel said Wednesday, DPA reported.
The wife of Sarkozy's 23-year-old son Jean gave birth to a son and the president told his cabinet that he was "over the moon" about it, Chatel said.
The name of the newest addition to the Sarkozy clan was not known, but like his grandfather he appears to be a male in a hurry: he came into the world one week before he was due.
Jean Sarkozy is married to Jessica Sibaoun-Darty, heiress to one of France's largest retailers, Darty.
