Europe did not react well to ash crisis, France's Kouchner says

The European Union did not react well to the travel crisis caused by a cloud of ash from an Icelandic volcano, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said Wednesday, DPA reported.

"Europe did not react well. We must adjust instructions (for such cases). It was unprecedented," Kouchner told France Info radio.

On the other hand, he praised French diplomats forced to deal with stranded travelers.

"The consulates worked day and night," he said, as officials found cheaper accommodations, provided information and in some cases even lent money.

He said some 70,000 French travelers were still stranded abroad as of late Tuesday.
