Barcelona is set to join other European cities in banning the niqab face veil and the burqa in municipal buildings, but human rights activists are preparing to launch a legal challenge, Press TV reported.
Barcelona Mayor Jordi Hereu said on Monday that the ban, which was ratified last month, is directed at all dress that hinders identification.
"It should not be possible that someone enters into a place without being identified," he stated.
Two other cities in the Spanish region of Catalonia, Lerida and El Venrell, have recently considered taking the same measures.
Certain European countries are considering a controversial law that requires Muslim women to remove their face veils in public.
Human rights activists maintain that such a law would violate the European Convention on Human Rights, which is supposed to guarantee the fundamental liberties of individuals.
