Sarkozy urges Middle East parties to avoid confrontation

French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Thursday urged both sides in the Middle East peace process to avoid any actions that would incite the other and endanger the negotiations, now that the first round of direct talks has concluded, dpa reported.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas held their first direct talks in Washington on Thursday and have announced plans to meet again in two weeks.

Sarkozy vowed to support the peace process with strong initiatives, perhaps with a summit during a meeting of the Mediterranean Union in November, his office said following a phone call between Sarkozy and US President Barack Obama.
