Polish opposition leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski has denied rumours that he is considering stepping down as chairman of the right-wing Law and Justice party, local media reported Monday.

"All information about my 'abdication' or my resignation are totally false," he is said to have written in a letter to members of his party, DPA reported.

Kaczynski, 61, also called on party members to display closeness in the run-up to municipal elections at the end of the year. Critics must "choose loyality or leave," he wrote.

The letter additionally criticized the ruling party of Prime Minister Donald Tusk for "submissiveness" toward Russia and acting like a "client" with Germany, adding that his Law and Justice party is the "only defender of national values."

The party had begun to debate its future after Kaczynski was defeated by Bronislaw Komorowski in July presidential elections.

Local newspapers had reported that Kaczynski may bow out, retaining only the post of honorary chairman, so he could devote his attention to finding out the exact cause of the April 10 plane crash in Russia that killed his twin brother Lech and 95 others.
