Jupp Heynckes was on Friday appointed Bayern Munich coach for the third time in his career from next season onwards until 2013, the German Bundesliga champions said on Friday, dpa reported.

Munich said in a statement on their website that the agreement was reached at a meeting Thursday between Heynckes and Munich top officials led by chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

"Jupp Heynckes was our desired candidate, we are delighted that we could reach an agreement. I am convinced that we will have a successful co-operation with Jupp Heynckes," said Rummenigge.

Heynckes said: "I have been Bayern coach twice and have always liked the climate in which you work there. Of course you have to be successful as Bayern coach. But it is an attractive challenge I want to meet together with the team."

Heynckes, 65, takes the place of Dutchman Louis van Gaal, who departs on June 30 after two years in the wake of a modest season in which Bayern will win no titles. Van Gaal led Munich to a domestic league and cup double and the Champions League final in 2010.

Heynckes is currently at Bayer Leverkusen but said on Monday that he will leave them after the season. He coached Munich to two Bundesliga titles during his first term 1987-1991 and led them into the Champions League in a five-game stint in 2009 after the sacking of Juergen Klinsmann.

Heynckes won the World Cup as a player in 1974 and as a coach guided Real Madrid to the 1998 Champions League trophy. He spent many years in Spain as helmsman at Athletic Bilbao, Tenerife and Real, and was also in charge of Portugal's Benfica.

In Germany apart from Munich, he has coached Borussia Moenchengladbach (the club he played for), Eintracht Frankfurt, Schalke and Leverkusen.

Munich are Germany's most successful club with 22 national titles, 15 German cups, four European cups and one UEFA Cup and Cup Winners' Cup each.
