Belgian taxi drivers blocked a highway leading to the main airport in Brussels overnight Wednesday, in protest over a police shooting that left one of their colleagues injured, the Belga news agency reported.

The 28-year-old taxi driver did not have the necessary permit to pick up customers at the airport and tried to flee from a police checkpoint on Tuesday night, hitting an officer, DPA reported.

He was shot in the shoulder and taken to hospital for treatment. Rumours that he had died followed.

The taxi drivers then set up a blockade on the highway to protest the incident, refusing to budge only after protracted negotiations ended at about 5 am.

Prosecutors are investigating the shooting. Airport officials said some flights were delayed.
