Six-goal Chelsea make history

Chelsea on Wednesday scored six goals, but became the first Champions League holders to be knocked out in the group phase, dpa reported.

Even though the Premier League side beat Danish rookies FC Nordsjaelland 6-1, Serie A champions Juventus secured a 1-0 win at the already-qualified Shakhtar Donetsk to deny Chelsea a place in the round of the last-16.

In group H there was agony for CFR Cluj, as their 1-0 victory at Manchester United was not enough to give them a place in the knock-out stage, as Turkish club Galatasary came from behind to win 2-1 in Braga.

United top the group with 12 points, while Galatasary go through with 10 points on the head-to-head count against Cluj, who would have become the first Romanian club to escape the group phase.

Also through on the night were Celtic, for whom Kris Commons scored a late penalty to give them a 2-1 victory against Spartak Moscow, who finished the game with 10 men.

Benfica, who held the mighty Barcelona to a goalless draw in the Camp Nou, were denied a place in the next round by Celtic's victory. Barcelona won the group with 12 points, while Celtic finished on 10 - two more than Benfica.

Barcelona's Lionel Messi, who is just one goal shy of Gerd Mueller's record of 85 goals in one year, started the match on the bench and then had to be stretchered off late in the game with an injury. At the time Barcelona had already made their three substitutions and had to finish the game with 10 players as a result.

In Munich a 10-man Bayern Munich beat BATE Borisov 4-1 to top group F from Valencia, who secured a 1-0 win in Lille.

In London Rafael Benitez finally won his first game as Chelsea manager, but it was to no avail as Oleksandr Kucher scored an own goal for Donetsk to give Juventus a 1-0 victory.

Nordsjaelland should have opened the scoring in the first half, but Nicolai Stokholm saw his penalty saved by Petr Cech. Just three minutes later Eden Hazard's penalty was also saved.

A record third first-half penalty finally broke the deadlock as David Luiz scored for the home side and Fernando Torres added a second in first-half stoppage time.

Joshua John pulled one back for the visitors a minute after the restart, but Chelsea then ran riot with Gary Cahill, Torres, Juan Mata and Oscar all scoring to make the final score 6-1 to take the Premier League side to 10 points.

Juventus top group E with 12 points, while Donetsk advance to the knock-out stage with 10 points as they won the head-to-head count against Chelsea.
