UN chief condemns attack at WFP office in Islamabad

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday condemned in the strongest terms the attack at the office of the UN food agency in Islamabad.

"I condemn in the strongest terms the attack at the Office of the World Food Programme (WFP) in Islamabad. This is a terrible tragedy for the UN and for the whole humanitarian community in Pakistan," Ban said in a statement issued in Geneva, Xinhua reported.

"This is a heinous crime committed against those who have been working tirelessly to assist the poor and the vulnerable on the frontlines of hunger and other human suffering in Pakistan," Ban said.

Ban also offered his "deepest condolences" to the victims and their families.

Ban's statement was issued after a suicide bomber struck the WFP building in central Islamabad, killing three persons.
