An armed man is holding some hostages in a building in the western Canadian city of Edmonton on Wednesday, police confirmed.
The man, a disgruntled worker, walked with a rifle into the building in the morning where more than 700 people were working. Tactical officers and negotiation team are on the scene, trying to bring a peaceful end to the event, reports reaching here said, Xinhua reported.
A police spokesman could not confirm how many people were being held hostage in the building, but said most people have been withdrawn.
An employee who was evacuated from the third floor of the building said as many as nine hostages were being held on the eighth floor, according to a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation ( CBC) report.
The building is located in downtown Edmonton, provincial capital of Alberta.
