A South African pilot died when his fighter jet crashed 10 to 15 km away from South Africa's Overberg Air Force Base in the Western Cape province on Saturday afternoon, the South African Press Association reported.
The fighter jet Electric Lighter was preparing to participate in an airshow which began on Friday at the Test Flight and Development Center near Bredasdorp, said Acting Commander Lieutenant Marius van den Heever, Xinhua reported.
Van den Heever said the pilot could not be identified as his family was yet to be informed of the tragic incident.
"No other fatalities or injuries were reported," he said.
The fighter jet belongs to Thunder City at the Cape Town International Airport. The airshow ends on Sunday.
