Canada's cold spell moves east

Canada's cold spell is moving to the east of the country after hitting the western province of Alberta, where meteorologists in Edmonton recorded temperatures of minus 46.1 degrees Celsius at the weekend, dpa reported.

Taking into account the windchill factor, the temperature in the west of the country hit minus 58.4 degrees Celsius, The Globe and Mail newspaper reported late Tuesday.

The cold front was approaching Canada's eastern province of Quebec, and temperatures in Montreal could reach minus 19 degrees Thursday, the paper reported.

Meteorologist Andre Cartin said the temperature could hit minus 20 degrees Friday night, the paper said.

It remained uncertain whether Canada would get a white Christmas.

The eastern province of Ontario endured snow up to a metre deep Monday. The snow was chest high in some areas north of Toronto, the country's main business centre. Up to 100,000 people were effectively cut off by the snow from Monday, the broadcaster ABC reported.
