A strong earthquake strikes eastern Indonesia

A strong earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale struck eastern Indonesian islands on Maluku province Tuesday morning, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, meteorologists said, dpa reported.

The quake took place at a depth of 106 kilometres, located about 262 kilometres north-west of remote Saumlaki district on southern Maluku province. It occurred at 4:51 am Jakarta time (2151 GMT Monday), the Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said.

It was the latest of a series earthquake to rock Indonesia is recent weeks.

On September 30, a powerful 7.6-magnitude quake struck off the western coast of Sumatra, killing more than 1,100 people and injuring hundreds of others.

A major 9.2-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami struck five years ago, leaving more than 170,000 people dead or missing in Indonesia's Aceh province on the northern end of Sumatra, and half a million people homeless.
